Intestinal parasites mainly affect children and the elderly and are caused by inadequate hygienic habits. Eumir Israel Juárez Valdez, attached to the Gastroenterology Service of the Hospital Juárez de México (HJM), said that 80 percent of all gastrointestinal diseases are caused by these microorganisms.
He said that of the population in general, infants and older adults are those who present greater symptomatology and vulnerability to complications such as malnutrition and bleeding of the digestive tract.
These microorganisms enter the body through contaminated food or water, and proliferate at temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. For this reason, it is important to prevent infectious pathology through proper hygiene habits such as washing hands before eating and after going to the bathroom, using antiseptics in public places and boiling water or use purified water, as well as avoid ingesting foods on the street .
Also, Juarez Valdez, it is necessary to attend in a timely manner to patients who present symptoms such as continuous diarrhea, abdominal pain, bleeding, mucosity or food remains in the evacuations and weight loss, since without proper treatment the parasites can disseminate to other organs, cause abscesses or, in very severe cases, death.
He reported that in Mexico the most common parasitic diseases are amebiasis and giardiasis. According to the epidemiological bulletin, in 2016 there were about 47 thousand cases of the first disease and more than two thousand of the second.
Dr. Emir Israel Juárez recommended to the population to go to the doctor and not self-medicate or consume in a constant way desparasitantes, since without the supervision or prescription of a specialist they can harm the intestinal flora and originate other type of infections that put their health at risk.
