At a time when leading economies like Europe, US, South Korea, Japan are ageing, India holds the advantage of having an increased working population.
With an average age of 29 years per person, India will become the world’s youngest country by 2020 with an average age of 29, India’s envoy to Sri Lanka said today.
Taranjith Singh Sandhu, India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, said that sixty-four per cent of India’s population will be in the working age group by 2020. Sandhu pointed out that at a time when leading economies like Europe, US, South Korea, Japan are ageing, India holds the advantage of having an increased working population.
“With western Europe, the US, South Korea, Japan and even China aging, this demographic potential offers India an unprecedented edge which could further contribute to the GDP growth rate,” he said. “The core aim of India’s foreign policy is to meet the developmental aspirations of its 1.25 billion people. Our diplomacy is for our development,” the envoy said. Lauding Narendra Modi-led Central Government’s efforts, Sandhu said that Indian foreign policy has become more proactive and the world appreciated India’s leadership. He added that there was a huge window of opportunity for India-Sri Lanka ties.
“We will soon be launching a SAARC communications and meteorology satellite which also has Sri Lankan partnership. There is a lot that we can do together. We are keen to integrate,” he added. Here, the envoy was actually referring to report published by IRIS Knowledge Foundation in collaboration with UN-HABITAT.
The report named ‘State of the Urban Youth, India 2012: Employment, Livelihoods, Skills,’ published in 2013, found out every third person in an Indian city today is a youth. In about seven years, the average age of an individual in India will be 29 years, very likely a city-dweller, making it the youngest country in the world. As per the report, India is set to experience a dynamic transformation, however, it remains an unaswered question that if the younger median age will be burden or an asset.
